π Job Summary and Purpose
The Head of Propulsion Systems leads the planning, execution, and supervision of the complete propulsion train installationβincluding Main Engines, Gearboxes, Shafting, Propellers, and Steering Gear. This role ensures precision alignment and integration with hull and auxiliary systems, adhering to IACS/Class Society standards.
π― Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
π§ Production Planning & Management
- Develop detailed installation micro-plans
- Allocate tasks to supervisors and teams
- Drive propulsion section to meet milestones, budget, and man-hour targets
βοΈ Critical Machinery Installation
- Supervise installation of main machinery
- Oversee optical/laser shaft alignment, stern tube boring, rudder boring
- Ensure final resin/metal chocking of engines and DG sets
π Outfitting & System Integration
- Direct hook-up and integrity testing of auxiliary systems (Fuel, Lube Oil, Cooling, Hydraulics, Control)
- Ensure seamless integration with propulsion train

Quality & Class Compliance
- Enforce Class Society rules (IRS, LRS, ABS, etc.) and QAP standards
- Coordinate third-party inspections and maintain certification documentation
π§ͺ Testing & Trials
- Lead pre-commissioning checks
- Manage Basin Trials (BT) and Sea Trials (STW/CST)
- Provide expert troubleshooting until vessel acceptance
π Documentation & Reporting
- Oversee documentation for propulsion, pump, and valve installations
- Ensure records (alignment, flushing, pressure tests, chocking certificates) meet Class, OEM, and internal standards
- Coordinate with Class Surveyors and QA teams for timely approvals
- Review and approve ITRs, Commissioning Reports, NCRs
- Maintain traceability via ERP/DMS systems
- Prepare final handover dossier with as-built drawings and test results
- Mentor documentation engineers and ensure reporting consistency
- Report documentation status to PMO

- Monitor installation progress via SAP/ERP
- Resolve technical challenges on-site
- Enforce Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment standards
π Qualifications, Experience & Skills
π Preferred Qualifications
- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Marine Engineering, or Naval Architecture (mandatory)
- Certification in Project Management or Class/Quality standards (preferred)
π§ Preferred Experience
- 12β18 years in Shipbuilding/Ship Repair
- Minimum 6β8 years in senior role handling high-precision machinery installation and trials
π‘ Functional & Behavioral Competencies
- Expertise in marine engine installation, alignment, boring, and chocking
- Strong knowledge of IACS/Class Rules and shipyard planning
- Leadership and team management skills
- Excellent coordination with stakeholders (Design, Production, SI, OEM, Owner)
- High commitment to quality, safety, and execution
- Refit/Repair experience is a plus
