Incharge Habitability (Asst./Dy. Manager)

Job Summary and Purpose

The Assistant/Deputy Manager Habitability will be responsible for planning, supervising, and executing carpentry, HVAC, accommodation, lagging, paneling and flooring works onboard ships under construction or repair. The role ensures adherence to project schedules, quality standards, class/owner requirements and HSE compliance, while optimizing manpower and resources. This position also involves coordination with multiple stakeholders, including internal teams, subcontractors, class societies and clients.

🎯 Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

📋 Planning & Coordination

1. Develop and implement detailed execution plans for all assigned outfitting works.
2. Coordinate with design/engineering for drawings, technical specifications and approvals.
3. Interface with Production, QA/QC, HSE and Procurement to ensure seamless workflow.
4. Prepare and present progress reports, highlighting risks and bottlenecks.

🛠️ Execution & Supervision

1. Supervise accommodation outfitting works: cabins, galleys, mess, toilets, flooring, wall/ceiling paneling and furnishings.
2. Oversee HVAC installation: ducting, equipment installation and insulation.
3. Monitor lagging/insulation works for piping, bulkheads and ducting per specifications.
4. Manage carpentry/joinery activities, including shipboard furniture and wooden fittings.
5. Control flooring installations (vinyl, tiles, epoxy, carpet, etc.).
6. Ensure optimal deployment of workforce and subcontractors.

📄 Documentation & Reporting

1. Maintain daily work logs for all accommodation outfitting activities, including carpentry, HVAC, lagging, paneling, and flooring.
2. Record workforce deployment, subcontractor progress, and completion of key milestones.
3. Prepare and submit weekly and monthly progress reports highlighting project status, risks, and bottlenecks.
4. Document inspections, defect rectifications, and handover reports for habitability works.
5. Maintain records of client and class society inspections and approvals.
6. Maintain updated copies of drawings, specifications, and approved design changes.
7. Track material usage, equipment deployment, and manpower allocation.
8. Maintain risk assessments, Permit-to-Work (PTW) logs, toolbox talk records, and safety incident reports.
9. Record minutes of meetings with clients, class societies, subcontractors, and internal teams.
10. Compile final handover dossiers for cabins, galleys, mess, toilets, HVAC systems, and furnishings.
11. Prepare project close-out reports.

✅ Quality Assurance & Compliance

1. Ensure compliance with class rules, IMO/SOLAS and client specifications.
2. Conduct inspections and ensure works are handed over defect-free.
3. Align execution with ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment) and ISO 45001 (Safety).

💰 Resource & Cost Management

1. Monitor usage of materials, consumables and manpower to minimize wastage.
2. Ensure timely requisition and availability of resources.
3. Support cost reduction initiatives.

🛡️ Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

1. Enforce HSE standards and ensure safe execution of outfitting works.
2. Conduct toolbox talks, risk assessments and ensure PTW (Permit to Work) compliance.
3. Report, investigate and close-out safety incidents.

🤝 Stakeholder & Client Interaction

1. Participate in project review meetings with class, clients and internal teams.
2. Coordinate inspections with Classification Societies and Owners.
3. Address and resolve client queries regarding accommodation outfitting.

🎓 Qualifications, Experience and Skills

📘 Preferred Qualifications

1. Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Marine / Industrial / Production Engineering or equivalent.
2. Certification in Project Management preferred.

🧠 Preferred Experience

1. Assistant Manager: 10–15 years in shipbuilding/offshore accommodation outfitting.
2. Deputy Manager: 7–12 years in shipbuilding/offshore accommodation outfitting.
3. Strong exposure to carpentry, HVAC, lagging/insulation, paneling, flooring and ship accommodation works.
4. Experience in managing subcontractors, multi-disciplinary teams and delivering projects to schedule and quality.
5. Familiarity with international ship classification societies (IRS, ABS, DNV, LR, BV).
6. Experience with IMO/SOLAS accommodation outfitting standards.
7. ERP/SAP environment exposure.

💡 Functional and Behavioral Competency

1. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, layouts and P&IDs.
2. Strong technical knowledge of HVAC systems, lagging/insulation materials, joinery and marine flooring systems.
3. Proficiency in MS Office; working knowledge of AutoCAD/ShipConstructor preferred.
4. Sound understanding of project planning, cost control and resource optimization.
5. Leadership and team management skills.
